Part of the success of franchise businesses is that they deliver the same experience to everyone, everywhere, every time. They have clear written procedures for doing just about everything, so there is no confusion about what needs to be done to deliver a high quality experience to the client/customer. A Big Mac in Boston will look and taste just like a Big Mac in Kansas City.
What would it mean to treat your own business like a franchise? Simply put, it means that you have a system in place for all of the major areas of your business: marketing, sales, accounting, order fulfillment, scheduling, etc. Those systems need to be written down, even if you are a solopreneur. Why? Because once it’s written down, you can analyze it and improve upon it, and, when and if you’re ready, duplicate it as your business grows.
So, start documenting your systems! In future blog posts, I’ll talk more about how to do this.
